Shout with joy to the LORD, all the earth; break into song; sing praise. Sing praise to the LORD with the lyre, with the lyre and melodious song. With trumpets and the sound of the horn shout with joy to the King, the LORD. – Psalm 98:4-6
Christ the King has a proud history of involvement in sacred music, both in the liturgy and in concerts and other special events. Parishioners of all ages offer their time and talents in a variety of roles, providing leadership and special music for the liturgy as cantors and choir members. Our choir members lift their voices – and the hearts of worshipers – through inspirational and uplifting music. The choir ministry is also a community unto itself, filled with the spirit of fellowship that fosters friendships in a large parish.
The choir sings under the direction of Tom Kendzia, our parish Director of Music Ministry. Tom is well known as a composer, arranger, producer, teacher, clinician, author and performer. He has been a professional liturgical musician for more than 30 years. Since 1980, Tom has appeared throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe at national and diocesan gatherings. He has been the music and worship director of the East Coast Conference for Religious Education since 2002. He has 15 collections of liturgical and instrumental music published by OCP, including The Ships That Sailed and Make Us One. Tom graduated from Manhattanville College in 1976 with a degree in piano and music education.
Our Associate Director of Music is Heather Skidds. Heather has a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the Crane School of Music in Potsdam, NY, where she studied voice and music education, and a Master of Arts in Liturgical Music from St. John’s University in Collegeville, MN, where she studied voice, choral conducting, and organ. Heather serves as the Director of the North Kingstown Community Adult and Youth Choruses. She is also on the board of the Providence Chapter of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians. Heather has offered workshops on many topics in liturgical music, liturgy, and theology at diocesan meetings and regional conferences. She comes to us after ministering as the Director of Music at St. Gregory the Great Church in Warwick for the last eleven years. Heather has performed for many years as a church musician, soprano soloist, choir director, pianist, organist, and teacher throughout RI, MA, NY and MN.
Do you know a young person who loves to sing? Christ the King is starting a new Children’s Choir for girls and boys in grades 3-8 directed by our new Associate Director of Music, Heather Skidds. The Children’s Choir will rehearse on Thursday evenings from 6-7 p.m. and will sing monthly at the 11:30 a.m. mass and for special concerts and holidays. Rehearsals will begin on Thursday, October 20. All children in grades 3-8 are welcome to join the group. No prior experience is necessary. Singing in the Christ the King Children’s Choir is a wonderful way for our children to grow in their love of music and service to our parish community.
The Spirit calls those with or without any musical training or experience, so please consider joining this rewarding and inspiring ministry that serves the parish family so perfectly! For more information, please speak to Tom Kendzia or Heather Skidds. (783-7459).
