In the liturgy, you are much more than simple ‘helpers of the parish priest.’ Above all, you are servers of Jesus Christ, of the eternal High Priest. Thus, you, altar servers, are called in particular to be young friends of Jesus. Be determined to go deeper and to cultivate this friendship with him. You will discover that in Jesus you have found a true friend for life. — Pope John Paul II, August 1, 2001
Throughout the world, there are hundreds of thousands of young people serving the Lord as altar servers! Serving at the altar of the Lord is both an honor and a privilege. It is one of the most effective ways that young people can deepen their understanding of the faith and begin to realize that active participation at Mass is rewarding on many levels. This helps us to draw closer to God and to the church, and to stay close to God and the church later in life.
By our Baptism, each of us is called to service. Through the ministry of altar service, Christ the King Parish is inviting young people to open their hearts, share their blessings, and become more engaged in our vibrant faith community.
Altar server ministry is an authentic opportunity for the younger members of our parish to develop the practice of stewardship and to learn about the liturgy first-hand. Many young Catholics struggle to find opportunities for stewardship in parish life. Encourage your children, grandchildren or nieces or nephews in the parish, to consider what could be the formal beginning of their stewardship. Altar server ministry is open to the young people of our parish in grades 4-12.
May the Holy Spirit inspire our young people to serve the Lord in this ministry, and bless them as they experience the rewards of stewardship and service to the church!
